Getting to Provincetown
Seasonal Boston ferries arrive at MacMillan Wharf; drivers follow Route 6 to town lots where summer rates and capacity make the first parking decision worth settling before departure.

Boston ferry and Cape Cod road approaches to Provincetown
This map shows the main arrival choices before the rest of the trip gets locked in. Boston is the primary approach to compare first. Hyannis is the helpful backup or add-on choice. The lines are planning corridors, not turn-by-turn road geometry, so use live directions before you drive.

- Solid line is the main approach; dashed lines are alternate regional approaches.
Ferry passengers land in town; drivers still need a parking plan
City Cruises lists an average 95-minute trip from Boston Long Wharf to MacMillan Wharf and requests arrival 30 minutes early. Bay State Cruise Company also runs seasonal service from Boston. In 2026 its late-fall weekend sailings run through November 15; check the live calendar before booking a room or connection.
Route 6 is the road spine
Drive when travelers will carry beach equipment or include wider Cape stops. Summer bridge and Route 6 traffic can add substantially to a no-traffic estimate.
Ferries work for a town-centered stay
Both Boston operators use MacMillan Wharf in the walkable center. Check the seasonal operating window, baggage and bicycle rules, and final return before purchase.
Use a town lot once
For the 2026 paid season, the town listed MacMillan Pier at $4 per hour with a $40 daily maximum and Grace Hall at $3 per hour with a $30 maximum. Town regulations limit stays to 48 hours at MacMillan and seven days at Grace Hall. Check rates and rules for your dates.
Walk, bike, pedicab, or shuttle afterward
Commercial Street is easiest without repeated car moves. Use the seasonal Provincetown–North Truro shuttle for beach and outer-town connections after checking its current route and timetable.

Drive for the wider Cape and beach gear
Follow Route 6 to the Cape tip, then unload once. MacMillan Pier is central but fills; Grace Hall is larger and a short walk from Commercial Street.
Ferry for a car-free center stay
City Cruises says its fast ferry operates from mid-May through mid-October and averages 95 minutes. Reserve early for weekends, holidays, and theme weeks.
Check the last return before the whale boat
A delayed three-to-four-hour whale watch can break a tight same-day ferry plan. Compare the operator's requested check-in and return ranges before buying nonrefundable tickets.
Beyond the pier without a car
The seasonal Provincetown–North Truro Shuttle serves MacMillan Pier, Herring Cove, Race Point and the Province Lands Visitor Center. Its operating days change by season: the published 2026 service ended October 11. Check the current timetable before relying on a beach return; the Flex connects Outer Cape towns with Provincetown on its own schedule.
Before booking a boat or room
Confirm the Boston departure terminal, sailing dates, luggage and bicycle policies with your ferry operator. Ask your lodging about parking or the walk from the pier, especially if arriving late or needing step-free access. Leave a generous connection after a whale watch: its return depends on conditions and whale locations.
