Provincetown weekend scene

Weekend itinerary

Ferry, Whale Watch, and Race Point Weekend

Arrive at MacMillan Wharf or park Friday, reserve Saturday for a three-to-four-hour whale watch, then choose Race Point or the Pilgrim Monument before Sunday departure.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

The whale boat controls Saturday's timing; Commercial Street, Race Point, and the monument fill the land hours.

Best length

2 nights

Two nights provide a weather window for whale watching, one full Commercial Street evening, and a beach or monument stop before departure.

Stay

The Provincetown Hotel at Gabriel's

A central stay by Town Hall and the Pilgrim Monument, with Commercial Street and MacMillan Wharf in walking…

Main activity

a naturalist-guided whale watch from MacMillan Pier

Regular trips typically take three to four hours. Whale location and sea conditions determine the route and exact return, so keep the advertised return free of tight connections.

Pace

Town Friday, whale watch Saturday, Cape tip Sunday

Reserve the boat first, avoid a hard connection after its advertised return, and choose only one exposed land activity for the same day.

Provincetown harbor with the Pilgrim Monument above town
Broad Atlantic shoreline at Race Point Beach
Evening gallery walk in Provincetown's East End

Friday

Arrive at MacMillan Wharf or park once, then walk Commercial Street.

Check in near the center, confirm the whale-watch departure and weather message, and keep the first evening between Town Hall, the harbor, and dinner.

4:00 PM

Saturday

Give the boat three to four hours and leave the return free of hard connections.

Eat early, reach MacMillan Pier about an hour before departure, and hold Race Point, Herring Cove, or galleries as the captain-canceled alternative.

2:30 PM

Afternoon

Choose Commercial Street or one beach after the boat.

Use the Canteen or Lobster Pot for a flexible meal, then walk galleries; choose Herring Cove or Race Point only if wind, energy, and transportation still support it.

Sunday

Climb the monument or use Race Point before the return trip.

Pack first, check the ferry or Route 6 departure, then choose one final stop: the Pilgrim Monument for town history and views or Race Point for Atlantic shoreline.
